Connecting at Depth
My name is Graham Allen and I am a counsellor providing both short- and long-term therapy in Golders Green as well as online. I am especially focussed on reconnection if you are feeling disconnected and the anxiety that can quickly become normalised
Whilst Self Help is where most people start, it doesn’t always address what subtley stops us from making change in our lives. This is where therapy can help, life as we currently live it may be holding us back, but we cannot see where the blocks are. We are limited to what we can achieve on our own, Counselling and Psychotherapy places therapeutic relationship at the centre of change.
Many people simply never have the time to talk through the issues which overwhelm them and in turn never experience being actively listened to in our frequently busy lives. This has an impact by way of relationship issues for many of us.
In addition we find it difficult to find any space to think – with texts, emails and social media on smartphones all creating a background of noise.
To move on we need to understand where we are currently, this can be painful but is generally a worthwhile venture.
Counselling offers no magic wand but it starts a journey, it is not about giving advice, it is about mutual exploration of issues and discovering your options.
Emotions and feelings get frozen and in a sense “locked in a box” – we dare not open the box and may use all sorts of damaging coping mechanisms. We may resort to addictions, self soothers, alcohol, smoking, relationships may flounder or we simply do not understand what is happening to us, hence we may get very angry. We can feel disconnected from ourselves.
A current problem of our times is the disconnection many of us feel. Reasons are complex and there is no simple solution but therapy offers human to human as opposed to human to screen interaction. We are 3D characters often operating with technology in a 2D world, this often misses being understood at depth and really being listened to over time. Therapy reverts back to in person attunement .
I qualified as a Counsellor in 2001 - experience isn’t always the most important aspect of choosing who to work with but it does mean that I have been actively involved in many scenarios that bring clients to therapy . Most are looking to alleviate suffering at some level.
The quality of relationship with the counsellor is one of the best predictors of outcomes in therapy , so this is important to you as a client and why an initial assessment session is a good way forward.
As well as being a therapist I remain actively involved in league sport, cycle daily and am involved in a mentoring role using drums and percussion as a connecting medium.
I am an Accredited BACP member with 20 years experience in Counselling from individuals to small groups and also in commerce and sport.
I studied Psychology as an undergraduate, Counselling and Psychotherapy Post Graduate and also taught Psychology in Education.
